"Hidden along the Caribbean coast in Vieques is one of the most spectacular
Bioluminescent Bays in the world. The mysterious blue-green light is created by
micro-organisms which thrive in an environment uniquely suited to their needs. A
trip into the bay on a balmy night is a magical experience. Fish flash by in
dark water like floating stardust."
Aboard one of our power
catamarans, our guests enjoy the breathtaking views of Puerto Rico’s east coast,
while the sun sets behind the mountains of El Yunque. Piña coladas, rum punch,
and beverages are served onboard during our trip to the small town of Isabel
Segunda where you are then taken by van to a local restaurant for a casual
dinner at the Island Adventures Eco-Center. (On occasion dinner will
be AFTER the tour. Please check in with us on the day of the excursion to
confirm this and your check in time.)
From Island Adventures
Eco-Center you'll board their Magic Bio bay School Bus for a trip down a bumpy
dirt road to the bay. There you will
board an electric powered pontoon boat that will take you through the amazing
waters of Puerto Mosquito in Vieques Island. We don’t offer Kayaks.
The bilingual guided tour will explain the fragile ecology of the plants and
animals of the bay, give interpretive star lectures, and then park the boat in
an area of high bioluminescent concentration, where the crew
will bring a couple
of buckets of water on board so that you can experience the sparkles all over
your arms and legs. Also they will put the ladder down so whoever wants to can
stick their hands and feet in the water. Please wear a bathing suit under your
clothes and bring a towel. We also ask that you do not wear insect repellent or
any other lotions (the dinoflagellates are very sensitive!)
The DNR (Department of
Natural Resources) does not allow swimming in the Bioluminescent Bay.
Guests should check in at
the boat a half hour before the trip time, and you may want to bring cash to
purchase anything extra at the souvenir shop.
